ABUJA: The African Democratic Congress ADC, a coalition-backed opposition party, has declared its readiness to confront the ruling All Progressives Congress APC in the 2027 general election, vowing to employ similar tactics to unseat the Bola Tinubu administration.
Despite not having sitting governors within its ranks, the ADC maintains its formidable stance, attributing the governors’ absence to intimidation from the current administration.
Following a meeting of the National Political Consultative Group (North) in Abuja, ADC Spokesman Malam Bolaji Abdullahi asserted that Nigerians are disgruntled with the Tinubu administration and are prepared to challenge the APC.
He expressed confidence in the ADC’s ability to counter any rigging attempts by the ruling party in the upcoming polls.
The meeting, which included prominent figures such as former Senate President David Mark, Malam Kashim Imam, Alhaji Adamu Maina Waziri, Salihu Moh. Lukman, former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami SAN, former Kaduna State governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai, Senator Dino Melaye, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, and ADC Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Mani Ibrahim, also observed a minute of silence for the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Addressing the issue of governors, Abdullahi stated, “We know that no serving governor will want to come to us now because of the kinds of intimidation that they are facing. We know what they are doing to them.
“The ADC welcomes everybody, but we are convinced that we are a movement that has the backing of the majority of Nigerians who are not happy with the direction this country is going.”
Abdullahi also dismissed predictions from ruling party politicians that the ADC would collapse within six months of its emergence.
He emphasized that the ADC is a “coalition of Nigerians” representing the desire for freedom from the current national crisis.
“Every Nigerian who is hungry knows that he doesn’t want this to continue… the only alternative today is the ADC,” he added.
He further assured that the party’s functional structures would prevent any cabal from hijacking its processes.
Earlier, Interim National Chairman Senator David Mark lamented that the North was “bleeding profusely” and proclaimed the ADC as the solution to restore the region’s fortunes.
Speaking on the theme “Peace and Social Cohesion, a Panacea to Challenges in the North,” Mark, a former military general, stressed the urgency of unity to salvage the region from violence and other troubles.
Babachir Lawal affirmed that Northerners have mandated their leaders to pursue the region’s interests through the ADC.
He also dismissed fears of electoral manipulation by the Tinubu administration in 2027.
“No one in ADC leadership or rank and file believes that votes do not count. Votes do count and we are going to make sure that votes count… Whatever techniques, whatever malicious activity they (APC) throw at us, we will counter it effectively, and we will counter and defeat them at it,” Lawal declared.
