ABUJA: The Federal Capital Territory FCT Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps NSCDC has intercepted a truck loaded with stolen street light poles, foiling a major theft of public infrastructure.
The suspects fled and abandoned the vehicle after being flagged down by NSCDC operatives.
According to Command spokesperson Monica Ojobi, the truck was seized by the Command’s Critical National Assets and Infrastructure CNAI Crack Team while on its way to Kano.
The incident took place around the Jabi axis of the city. After the driver and his assistant fled the scene on foot, officers impounded the truck and towed it to the Command for investigation.
FCT Commandant, Dr Olusola Odumosu condemned the vandals for “sabotaging government efforts in providing necessary social amenities.”
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to its anti-vandalism campaign and warned that anyone involved in these criminal activities would face legal consequences, including jail time.
Odumosu also issued a stern warning to leaders of scavenger (Pantaker) markets in the FCT, telling them to stop dealing in stolen government property or risk having their markets permanently shut down.
“When there is no demand, there cannot be any supply,” the Commandant stated, underscoring the need for market leaders to comply with regulations.
The Commandant also appealed to road users to be more careful to avoid damaging public infrastructure like street light poles.
He noted that such destruction can lead to total darkness in the city and increase the risk of accidents.
Odumosu urged the public to support the NSCDC by reporting suspicious activities or vandalism to the Command’s emergency numbers: 09166229882 or 08159066244.
