ABEOKUTA: The Ogun State Police Command on Saturday confirmed the arrest of two officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC and others over alleged electoral offences in Iperu, Ikenne Local Government Area during the bye-election.

In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the suspects were apprehended during a stop-and-search operation at about 12:45am in Iperu.

According to Odutola, the police intercepted a Mitsubishi Space Wagon with registration number LAGOS AKD 887 HT, carrying three persons: Mr. Toryem Joe-Stans and Ms. Mandara Aminat, both INEC officials, along with their driver.

A search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered the sum of ₦2.5 million, found in possession of Joe-Stans.

During preliminary questioning, he allegedly admitted that the money was handed to him at Kehoy Hotel in Iperu by an individual he identified as “Political Solution,” claiming he collected it on the instruction of his supervisor.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department SCID, Eleweran, for further investigation.

He assured residents that the police are maintaining close surveillance on the ongoing election and promised to provide updates as investigations progress.
