LOKOJA: The bye-election for the Dekina-Okura State Constituency in Kogi State on Saturday turned violent after suspected thugs beat up an agent of the Allied People’s Movement APM in Anyigba.
The incident reportedly occurred near the Registration Area Centre RAC, close to Our Lady of Schools, where the APM agent protested the alleged failure to distribute election materials to polling units.
His insistence that the materials be deployed as required was said to have angered the thugs, who descended on him with blows.
The victim was later rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
In its reaction, the APM accused security operatives of failing to curb the activities of political thugs, alleging that officers on the ground watched as their agent was assaulted without intervening.
Despite the disruption, voting concluded in the constituency and residents now await the official announcement of results from the collation centre.
