ABUJA: What should have been an ordinary day at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria FRCN, popularly called Radio House, in Area 10, Garki, Abuja, ended in disaster on Sunday when a 25-year old man was crushed to death after a foundation under excavation collapsed.
The fatal incident, which occurred within the premises of the national broadcast hub, has once again thrown a harsh spotlight on the alarming disregard for safety standards at many construction sites across the Federal Capital Territory.
Confirming the tragedy, Deputy Controller Paul Abraham, National Public Relations Officer of the Federal Fire Service FFS, said rescue teams responded swiftly after receiving an emergency call.
“Tragically, the incident led to the death of a 25-year old man. His remains were recovered by our team and handed over to his family,” Abraham stated.
While commiserating with the victim’s family, Abraham issued a stern reminder to construction companies about the consequences of cutting corners, stressing that failure to follow standard safety procedures continues to cost innocent lives.
Our correspondent reports that the incident underscores a disturbing pattern of negligence in Abuja’s building sector—where weak oversight, poor enforcement of safety regulations, and the rush to meet deadlines often outweigh the sanctity of human life.
With Abuja’s skyline expanding daily, the Radio House collapse is a grim reminder that development without compliance to safety codes is a disaster waiting to happen.
The Federal Fire Service urged residents to promptly report emergencies through its toll-free line 112 or 0803 200 3557.
