ABUJA: Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has announced a temporary break from public activities to attend to his health.
Obi, who made the disclosure on Saturday through his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, said his personal physician advised him to take a short rest after he fell ill during a recent outing in Enugu State.
The former Anambra State governor explained that he had been unwell while attending a tourism event in Enugu and later visited a hospital where he was placed on medication. “The doctor advised me to take a day or two days’ rest. In obedience to this, I will not be able to meet up with my scheduled engagements within and outside the country this weekend,” Obi wrote.
He apologised to supporters and stakeholders for any inconvenience, pledging to resume activities after recovery.
Before stepping aside, Obi visited the Good Hope Specialist Hospital in Isulo, Orumba South LGA of Anambra State, a facility being acquired by the Aguata Diocese of the Church of Nigeria.
He announced a personal donation of ₦10 million to support the Diocese’s ambitious plan to transform the hospital into a comprehensive health complex, including a School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Technology.
“Healthcare remains one of the most meaningful investments we can make. Faith-based organisations have shown that with the right support, they can deliver excellence,” Obi said.
Obi also revealed that after visiting Isulo, he proceeded to Owerri, Imo State, to attend a dinner hosted by Barrister Nnaemeka Maduagwu in honour of former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
Despite his health setback, Obi stressed his commitment to promoting healthcare development in Nigeria, adding that investments in hospitals and training institutions would ensure better access to quality care for future generations.
