SOKOTO: In a major breakthrough against banditry in Sokoto State, residents of Shagari and Bimasa villages in Tureta and Shagari Local Government Areas have killed no fewer than 15 armed bandits, freed kidnapped victims, and recovered dozens of stolen cattle.
According to eyewitnesses, the heavily armed criminals stormed the two villages in large numbers, but were overpowered in a fierce gun battle that lasted for hours.
The communities, long plagued by kidnappings, cattle rustling, and deadly raids, mobilized in a coordinated self-defence effort that forced the attackers to flee.
During the clash, several kidnap victims held in nearby forests were rescued as the retreating bandits abandoned their captives.
The recovery of stolen cows has also brought relief to local farmers and herders who depend on livestock for survival.
Security sources in Sokoto described the counteroffensive as a turning point in the fight against banditry and terrorism in Northwest Nigeria, praising the resilience and unity of the villagers.
“This is a bold statement from Shagari and Bimasa people that they will no longer fold their arms while bandits kill, kidnap, and loot,” said a resident who took part in the defense.
For years, bandits in Northwest Nigeria have unleashed waves of terror across Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi States, displacing thousands and crippling rural economies. But the latest victory, locals say, has renewed hope that with vigilance and government support, the menace can be defeated.
Community leaders in Shagari and Bimasa have urged the Sokoto State Government and the Federal Government to consolidate on the success by deploying more security personnel to prevent reprisal attacks. They also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intensify the Renewed Hope Agenda on national security, with special focus on rural communities ravaged by banditry.
“This is just the beginning. We will never allow bandits to dictate our lives again,” a youth leader in Shagari vowed.
While the Sokoto State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement, observers say the development highlights the effectiveness of community self-defence and vigilance in tackling rural insecurity.
