ABUJA: President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, whose sudden exit on Tuesday has stirred political debate over the pressures within the federal cabinet.
Nnaji, appointed in August 2023, bowed out after months of what he described as “blackmail” by political opponents. In his resignation letter, he thanked the President for the opportunity to serve, but hinted that a sustained campaign against him had made his position untenable.
The development comes as the administration faces increasing scrutiny over its appointees and governance style. Analysts say Nnaji’s departure could embolden critics of the government who have accused Tinubu of shielding some allies from accountability while others face political heat.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, in a statement, said the President had accepted the resignation and commended Nnaji’s contributions, while wishing him well in future endeavours.
However, observers note that the resignation underscores the deepening rivalries within the political class and raises fresh questions about cohesion in Tinubu’s cabinet, just over a year into office.
