ABUJA: The Federal Capital Territory FCT Command of the Federal Fire Service FFS, has opened fresh collaboration with traders at the Kugbo Timber and Furniture Market in Abuja to strengthen fire prevention systems and reduce the frequency of fire outbreaks in timber markets across the territory.

The initiative followed a strategic meeting on Monday between the Controller of Fire, Mohammed Anas, and executives of the various market associations, held at the Command Headquarters.

According to a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSF Barnabas Anyam, CF Anas said the renewed engagement was driven by the persistent fire risks associated with timber markets, which are heavily stocked with combustible materials.

He commended the market officials for honouring the invitation and stressed the urgency of adopting proactive fire safety measures to avert destructive incidents.

During the engagement, the Controller recommended the establishment of a fire station within or close to Kugbo Market to ensure swift response during emergencies.

He also proposed the installation of fire hydrants at strategic points in the market and directed that fire extinguishers be provided in all sections.

CF Anas further emphasised the importance of training traders and market workers on the proper use of fire extinguishers and general fire safety practices.

Representatives of the Kugbo Timber Market expressed appreciation to the Fire Service for its intervention and pledged full cooperation in implementing the safety recommendations.

Both parties agreed to conduct a joint inspection of the market and to organise a comprehensive fire safety and disaster management training programme for traders as part of efforts to reduce fire risks across FCT markets.
