ABEOKUTA: The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP and its 2023 gubernatorial candidate, Ladi Adebutu, have officially endorsed President Bola Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election.
The announcement was made by the State Chairman, Abayomi Tella, during a campaign flag-off for the Remo Federal Constituency bye-election.
Speaking at the palace of the Akarigbo of Remoland in Sagamu, Tella explained that the party’s decision to support President Tinubu is based on regional solidarity.
“We will support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Though he is in the opposition, let us support our own from the Southwest,” Tella said. “Our support is for Tinubu, and we will stand by him.”
Tella dismissed recent defections from the PDP, including that of the party’s former governorship running mate, Adekunle Akinlade, stating that the defectors lacked political influence.
PDP’s former gubernatorial candidate, Ladi Adebutu, reiterated the party’s stance, confirming that the Ogun PDP holds no grudge against President Tinubu.
However, he accused the state’s Governor, Dapo Abiodun, of bad governance and vowed that the PDP would challenge the ruling APC in the 2027 state elections.
“I was with the President in January and I told him that we have no issue with his leadership and candidacy,” Adebutu said. “We, however, have issues with bad governance in Ogun state, that is why we must have this platform to challenge bad governance.”
Adebutu urged party members to rally behind their candidate for the Remo Federal Constituency bye-election, Bolarinwa Oluwole.
He described the bye-election as an opportunity to “punish bad governance and restore sanity” in the state.
He noted that the PDP had won 34 out of 35 wards in the constituency in the last election, suggesting that the APC has lost favor with the people.
National Vice Chairman of the PDP, Engr Kamorudeen Ajisafe, presented the party’s flag to Oluwole, who pledged to provide quality representation if elected.
The bye-election seeks to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga in January.
