ABUJA: Human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, was released from police custody on Friday after a three-day detention, which he described as “unjust, illegal and unwarranted.”
Sowore confirmed his release in a social media post, stating, “Nigeria Police Force has capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movt, I have been released from unjust, illegal & unwarranted detention. However, it is nothing to celebrate, but thank u for not giving up! #RevolutionNow”.
He also alleged that police officers broke his wrist while he was in detention.
Sowore’s arrest came after he honoured a police invitation at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
According to his lawyers and media reports, he was detained after being invited for questioning over a petition alleging forgery and criminal defamation.
His detention sparked outrage among human rights groups and supporters who demanded his immediate release.
The activist, a prominent critic of government policies and a key figure in the #RevolutionNow movement, has faced multiple arrests in the past.
His latest detention has been viewed by his supporters and legal team as a calculated move to silence a critical voice.
