KEFFI: The Federal Government has recaptured seven out of the 16 inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Keffi (New), in Nasarawa State on Tuesday.

Sixteen inmates had breached the facility in the early hours of Tuesday, attacking warders on duty.

In a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar, the Service said the incident occurred when some inmates attacked personnel on duty, overpowering them and creating an opportunity for others to flee.

Five officers sustained varying degrees of injury in the attack, with two reported to be in serious condition and receiving urgent medical attention at a government hospital.
The NCoS disclosed that swift response efforts led to the recapture of seven of the escaped inmates, while a manhunt is underway for the remaining nine in collaboration with other security agencies.

Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, who immediately visited the facility, ordered a thorough investigation and vowed that any staff found complicit would face strict sanctions.
He urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, and to report any suspicious movements or sightings of escapees to the nearest security formation.
While investigations continue, the NCoS assured the public of its commitment to safeguarding all custodial facilities across the country and maintaining public safety.
