ABUJA: The Nigerian Senate has announced plans to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into a string of recent confrontations between airline operators and passengers, incidents that have sparked debates over safety standards, passenger rights, and discipline within the aviation industry.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari (APC, Oyo North), described the cases as troubling and called for urgent, coordinated interventions to safeguard the sector’s reputation and restore public trust.

Senator Buhari explained that the probe would be undertaken under the Senate’s constitutional oversight powers, engaging aviation regulators, airline operators, security agencies, and civil society groups. The goal, he said, is to ascertain the facts, review operational procedures, and enforce corrective actions to avert similar incidents in the future.

“We will not allow loopholes or weak enforcement to compromise safety, professionalism, or public confidence in our aviation system,” Senator Buhari stated. “The committee will ensure that accountability is upheld across the board.”

The announcement follows two high-profile incidents that have dominated recent headlines. The first involved renowned Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, popularly known as KWAM 1, who was removed from a ValueJet flight at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport after allegedly attempting to board with a liquid substance—later confirmed to be alcohol—and refusing to comply with security checks. The altercation reportedly involved airline staff, a security officer, and the flight captain before airport security escorted him off the aircraft.

In another case, Ibom Air imposed a permanent travel ban on a passenger, Comfort Emmanson, accused of assaulting crew members on a Uyo–Lagos flight at Lagos airport. The airline confirmed that the passenger was detained by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) security personnel and handed over to the Nigeria Police for further investigation.

The Senate Committee on Aviation assured Nigerians that it would pursue the investigation to its conclusion, with measures put in place to strengthen operational discipline and protect both passengers and airline staff.
