ABUJA: Ahead of Saturday’s State Assembly bye-election in Anambra State, the 2023 Labour Party LP presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has broken his silence on why he is throwing his weight behind the African Democratic Congress ADC candidate.

In a statement issued on Wednesday through his media office, Peter Obi Media Reach POMR, and signed by spokesperson Ibrahim Umar, Obi explained that his decision stemmed from the unresolved crisis surrounding LP’s participation in the polls.

“INEC has yet to resolve Labour Party’s issues in this election. As things stand, LP has no candidate for Saturday’s nationwide bye-elections,” the statement read in part.

Obi further revealed that the ADC candidate in question is the widow of the late LP state assembly member, Hon. Justice Azuka, who was killed by kidnappers in February.

“On compassionate grounds, the leadership of ADC and LP, alongside Labour Party Senator Tony Nwoye, House of Representatives member Idu Emeka, and Onitsha South Assembly members, agreed she should complete her husband’s tenure,” POMR noted.

The former Anambra governor stressed that where there is no dispute over candidates, he remains fully committed to supporting LP flagbearers, citing the November governorship election in which he is backing Chief George Moghalu of the Labour Party.

“This clarification should end the confusion. Obi remains firmly at the helm of LP’s leadership and committed to his mission for a new Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
