ABUJA: Apparently taking a cue from developments in the Federal Capital Territory FCT, the Federal Executive Council FEC has approved ₦142.03 billion for the construction of state-of-the-art bus terminals in each of Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.
According to FEC, this is its first direct intervention in road transport infrastructure beyond road construction.
FCT minister, Nyesom Wike had recently built some Mega bus and taxi terminals in the nation’s capital, Abuja, promising to extend the gesture to other parts of the territory.
Minister of Transportation, Senator Sa’idu Ahmed Alkali, announced the decision on Wednesday after the FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The contract, awarded to Messrs Planet Project Limited, will deliver modern transport hubs in Abeokuta (South-West), Gombe (North-East), Kano (North-West), Lokoja (North-Central), Onitsha (South-East), and Ewu in Edo State (South-South).
Senator Alkali said the terminals, chosen for their economic viability, will address a long-standing gap in Nigeria’s transport system that has fueled crime, road accidents, and the illegal flow of arms along major highways.
“Despite road transport’s importance, Nigeria has no purpose-built terminals for millions of commuters,” Alkali noted. “This project will improve safety, enhance passenger comfort, and boost economic activity nationwide.”
According to the minister, the initiative underwent thorough evaluation before being presented to the President and FEC for approval, with its benefits extending to both transportation efficiency and national security.
