Thirty-four years ago, precisely August 27, 1991, on the banks of the Niger and Benue, a new state was born — Kogi, the Confluence State. Today, as it marks another year of existence, it is worth pausing not just to celebrate but to reflect: has the promise of that creation been fulfilled?
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s anniversary message strikes at the heart of this question. His words, “I hear your voices,” are both a reassurance and a challenge. They acknowledge the aspirations of the farmer who seeks fertile ground, the trader who needs better roads, the student yearning for brighter classrooms and the patient who longs for a responsive healthcare system.
Kogi’s journey since 1991 has been one of resilience. The state has endured its share of trials, yet each setback has been met with determination. Today, we see signs of transformation — roads opening new pathways, schools being remodeled, hospitals revived and rural communities receiving renewed attention. Progress, no doubt, has been made. But as the Governor himself admits, “We may not yet be where we desire to be, but we are certainly no longer where we used to be.”
That honesty must now be matched with urgency. Thirty-four years on, Kogi can no longer afford to linger in the shadows of potential. The time for incremental steps is over; the time for bold strides has come. A future where every child enjoys quality education, where industries flourish, where agriculture guarantees prosperity and where healthcare is within reach of all citizens is not a dream too far — it is a necessity.
But this vision cannot rest on the shoulders of government alone. The Governor is right to insist that service and results, not politics, should define leadership. Yet he is equally right to call for partnership. Kogi’s progress requires the unity, hard work and sacrifice of every citizen.
As the state celebrates its 34th anniversary, we believe that the journey ahead must be one of shared responsibility. The voices of the people must continue to be heard, not only by the Governor but also by every arm of government. For when leadership listens and the people respond with commitment, the promise of the Confluence State will not just be remembered — it will be realized.
We, at Media Hub Nigeria Limited – publishers of newshubng.com – are proud to associate with the government and people of Kogi State on this auspicious occasion.
Happy Anniversary, Kogi. May the next chapter of your history shine brighter than the last and may you continue to be a confluence of opportunities to this generation and those yet unborn.
