BENIN: Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Saturday personally intervened in the rescue of more than 10 victims of a road accident along the Benin–Auchi highway.

Gov. Okpebholo at the scene

The incident occurred shortly after the bypass when the governor, who was travelling with his entourage to Irrua in Esan Central Local Government Area, met a heavy gridlock and alighted to assess the situation.

the governor met several passengers in critical condition, many of them bleeding profusely, while onlookers reportedly stood by recording videos rather than offering assistance.

Moved by the scene, Okpebholo ordered two of his security Hilux vehicles to be converted into emergency transport vans. He supervised as the victims, including a woman with severe injuries, were lifted into the vehicles and taken to hospital for urgent treatment.

Eyewitnesses said the crash was caused by the driver of a white Toyota Venza, with registration number GWA 50 AW (Abuja), who allegedly drove against traffic. The vehicle reportedly collided with three commercial minibuses carrying passengers, leaving many injured and causing a major traffic standstill.

The governor remained at the scene until he was assured that the injured were safely conveyed to a medical facility, escorted by another security vehicle, before continuing his trip to Irrua.

His intervention drew applause from motorists and residents. One eyewitness said: “Before the governor arrived, people were only taking pictures and videos. But he came, took charge, and ensured the victims were rescued. This is the kind of leader we need; one who leads with compassion and action.”

The governor’s swift response has since been hailed by sympathizers as a demonstration of humane and decisive leadership.
