ABUJA: The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention NCDC has confirmed three new cases of Lassa fever in Edo and Ondo states, according to its Week 34 Situation Report covering August 18–24, 2025.
The figure by the NCDC shows a drop from five cases reported the previous week.
Cumulatively, Nigeria has recorded 857 confirmed cases and 160 deaths in 2025, translating to a case fatality rate (CFR) of 18.7 percent—higher than the 17.1 percent CFR reported during the same period in 2024.
So far, 21 states and 106 local government areas have reported at least one case, with Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi accounting for 90 percent of the total infections.
The Centre noted that the most affected age group remains 21–30 years. It also confirmed that no new healthcare worker infections were recorded in the week under review.
Despite the latest figures, NCDC said both suspected and confirmed cases of Lassa fever are on a downward trend compared to the same period last year.
