ABUJA: The Federal Capital Territory FCT Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps NSCDC has revealed that its Peace and Conflict Resolution PCR Unit successfully mediated 38 disputes within the last nine months, ranging from land disagreements and family quarrels to herder-farmer clashes and inter-communal disputes.

Spokesperson of the Command, DSC Monica Ojobi, in a statement on Monday in Abuja said the Commandant, Dr Olusola Odumosu made the disclosure during activities marking the 2025 International Day of Peace.

She said the feat was achieved through the Alternative Dispute Resolution ADR platforms of the Corps, which are active across the six area councils of the FCT.

Dr Odumosu, who led officers on a Peace Walk through major parts of the city, explained that four chartered mediators within the PCR unit had been instrumental in settling cases before they escalated into violence.

“Peace has eluded us as a nation. My message to the people is to imbibe peace, appreciate our unity in diversity and engage in mediation instead of confrontation,” Odumosu said, stressing that peace was not just the absence of violence, but the presence of justice, tolerance, dialogue and respect for human dignity.

The Commandant said the 2025 International Day of Peace, themed “Act Now for a Peaceful World,” was timely, noting that many conflicts in Nigeria often begin as misunderstandings before snowballing into violence.

He emphasized that the NSCDC, apart from protecting lives and national assets, was deeply committed to preventing conflicts through mediation.

Also speaking at the event, Country Director of Search for Common Ground, Karno Ouattara, whose organization partnered the NSCDC in the commemoration, underscored the importance of dialogue and collaboration in resolving disputes, warning that violence only deepens divisions.

The celebration featured a Peace Lecture at the Command Headquarters in Wuse Zone 5, after the Peace Walk which covered Wuse Market, Sky Memorial and Berger Roundabout, all in Abuja.
