Senate Extends Holiday by 2 Weeks

ABUJA: The Senate has shifted its resumption of plenary from September 23 to October 7, 2025, extending its annual holiday by two weeks.

The chamber had adjourned on July 24 for its long recess and was expected to reconvene today. But in a notice issued on Tuesday morning, the Chief of Staff to the Senate President, Chinedu Akubueze, informed senators of the new date without giving any reason for the delay.

“This is to respectfully inform Distinguished Senators that the resumption of plenary sitting of the Senate, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025, has been shifted to Tuesday, 7th October, 2025. Any inconvenience this short notice may cause is deeply regretted,” the statement read.

The last-minute communication, which expressed regrets over the adjustment, was unusual in that it came from the Chief of Staff rather than the Clerk of the Senate, who traditionally issues such notices.

The development comes just days after the National Assembly Service Commission approved the appointment of Emmanuel Odo as Acting Clerk of the Senate at its 10th meeting held on September 16, 2025.

With the extension of the holiday, legislative business in the Red Chamber remains on hold, leaving several pending matters awaiting debate and decisions.
