ABUJA: The All Progressives Congress APC has adopted the consensus mode for its governorship primary election in Ekiti State, paving the way for Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji to emerge as the party’s sole candidate for the June 2026 polls.

The shift from the earlier proposed direct primary followed the voluntary withdrawal of one of the two cleared aspirants, Mrs. Atinuke Oluremi Omolayo. In a letter to the party, Omolayo announced her decision to step down and endorse Governor Oyebanji, pledging support for any arrangement the APC deems fit in nominating its standard-bearer in line with the Electoral Act, 2022 and the party’s constitution.

Confirming the development, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, said the party had duly informed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of its decision in a letter dated October 13, 2025.

Morka explained that the decision met the requirements of Sections 84(9) and (11) of the Electoral Act, which allow for consensus primaries. He further unveiled the timetable of activities for the nomination congress: Delegate Congress on Saturday, October 25; Delegate Congress Appeal on Sunday, October 26; and a Special Nomination Congress to ratify the consensus candidate on Monday, October 27.

The ruling party commended Omolayo for what it described as her “spirit of sportsmanship” and “commitment to party unity,” urging APC leaders and members in Ekiti to rally behind Oyebanji in the forthcoming election.
