
ABUJA: The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency NiHSA has issued a warning that heavy flooding is expected to affect 198 Local Government Areas LGAs across 31 states and the Federal Capital Territory FCT between August 7 and 21, 2025.
According to a statement from the agency, over 832 communities are at risk, with flood risk levels categorized as Very High, High, and Moderate based on local topography and rainfall forecasts.
States at Risk
The states under the flood threat include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, FCT, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara.
NiHSA also highlighted that more than 100 major transportation routes could face disruptions, and there is a high likelihood of displacement, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
NiHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, urged residents in the affected regions to remain vigilant and cooperate with emergency response agencies.
“This alert is issued in line with our commitment to safeguarding lives and property,” he said.
Mohammed called on state and local governments to take proactive measures to mitigate risks and ensure community safety.
He assured the public that NiHSA will continue to monitor the hydrological situation and provide timely updates.
