BENIN: As Edo State marks its 34th anniversary, Governor Monday Okpebholo has paid glowing tributes to the founding fathers and past leaders of the state, while urging citizens to embrace unity and collective responsibility in building a more prosperous future.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor congratulated all Edo people at home and in the diaspora, describing their resilience and indomitable spirit as the bedrock of the state’s progress since its creation on August 27, 1991.
“Today, we celebrate 34 years of our existence as a state. This is not just a celebration of a date, but a moment to reflect on our journey, acknowledge our achievements, and recommit ourselves to the vision of a prosperous and developed Edo State,” Okpebholo said.
The governor noted advancements in education, healthcare, infrastructure and economic development, noting that despite challenges, Edo had consistently moved forward through the determination of its people and in line with the vision of its founding fathers.
He also underscored the state’s historic legacy, particularly from the ancient Benin Kingdom, which he said had provided a strong foundation of art, culture and governance upon which modern Edo is built.
“As we look back at the past 34 years, we have every reason to be proud. Edo State stands today as a beacon of progress and potential,” the governor added.
Calling for unity across ethnic and political lines, Okpebholo stressed that the task of building the Edo of everyone’s dreams rests on collective effort.
“The future of our state depends on our ability to work together. Let us put aside our differences and focus on what unites us — our shared desire for a better Edo,” he urged.
Reiterating his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability and people-centered governance, Okpebholo assured that job creation, improved security and sustainable development remain top priorities.
“As we celebrate this 34th anniversary, let us renew our hope and commitment to a brighter future. With God on our side and with our collective effort, Edo State will attain even greater heights,” he said.
