LAGOS: A fire at the Egbin Power Plant has led to a significant disruption of electricity supply, causing a blackout in parts of Lagos and Ogun states.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria TCN announced on Wednesday that the incident, which occurred on August 5, 2025, has affected bulk electricity transmission to several substations.

According to a statement from TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the fire started at approximately 6:30am at a service transformer owned by Egbin Power Plc.

The fire spread to a TCN-owned 150MVA power transformer, causing damage and oil leakage.

Investigations revealed that the fire was caused by a faulty 33kV instrument transformer belonging to Egbin Power Plc.

The resulting damage to the TCN transformer has temporarily reduced bulk power supply to the Ikorodu and Odogunyan 132/33kV transmission substations.

This disruption has impacted the franchise areas of both the Ikeja Electric Distribution Company IKEDC and the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company IBEDC, affecting parts of Lagos and Ogun. Areas on the 132kV network, including Sagamu Line 1, Sagamu Line 2, and Maryland Line 2, have also been affected.

Load-Shedding and Restoration Efforts

At the time of the incident, a total load of 47MW was affected.

Although this load was diverted to another transformer, the resulting capacity deficit has increased, leading to load-shedding across the affected areas.

The TCN has apologized for the inconvenience and is making “urgent arrangements to source the replacement transformer.”

The company has also notified IKEDC and IBEDC to assist with load management in their respective franchise areas and has pledged to work diligently to restore normal power supply as quickly as possible.
